Morgan Wallen leads the nominations for the 2024 CMA Awards with seven nods, as voted on by eligible members of the Country Music Association.
Close behind are Cody Johnson and Chris Stapleton with five nominations each, while Post Malone and Lainey Wilson secured four apiece.
Louis Bell, Luke Combs, Charlie Handsome, Hoskins, Jelly Roll, Megan Moroney, and Kacey Musgraves each received three nominations.
This marks a significant moment for Wallen, who hasn’t won at the CMAs since being named New Artist of the Year four years ago.
His career took a hit after a 2021 incident where he was caught on video using a racial slur, which likely impacted his awards trajectory.
Stapleton earned his eighth nomination for Entertainer of the Year, a category he has yet to win. He now holds the record for the most nominations in that category without a win.
Joining him in the race are Combs (with his fifth nod), Wallen (third nod), Wilson (second nod), and Jelly Roll (first nod).
The eligibility period for the 2024 CMA Awards ran from July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2024, meaning highly anticipated albums like Zach Bryan’s The Great American Bar Scene, Wilson’s Whirlwind, and Post Malone’s F-1 Trillion will be eligible next year.
All five Album of the Year nominees reached the top five on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart. Notably, Jelly Roll’s Whitsitt Chapel, released in June 2023, qualifies despite being released outside the current eligibility period because the majority of its success occurred within this year's timeframe, as per a new CMA rule.
Stapleton’s Starting Over is his fifth consecutive album to be nominated for Album of the Year, representing his entire solo discography. Combs’ Fathers & Sons earned his fourth consecutive nod in this category.
Conspicuously absent from the ballot is Beyoncé, whose recent release Cowboy Carter was not considered a country album.
Beyoncé herself clarified this in a March Instagram post, stating, “This ain’t a country album. This is a ‘Beyoncé’ album.”
She also referenced her feeling of not being welcomed, which was seen as a nod to her controversial 2016 CMA Awards performance with The Chicks.
Post Malone and Wallen’s “I Had Some Help,” alongside Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” the top two tracks on Billboard’s Songs of the Summer chart, are both nominated for Single of the Year.
Additionally, Cody Johnson’s “Dirt Cheap” and Stapleton’s “White Horse” are up for Single, Song, and Music Video of the Year, though “White Horse” missed the video nomination.
The nominees for New Artist of the Year include Megan Moroney, Shaboozey, Nate Smith, Mitchell Tenpenny, Zach Top, and Bailey Zimmerman. Moroney was also nominated last year, and Zimmerman two years ago, with CMA rules allowing two nominations in this category.
Shaboozey becomes the fifth Black artist nominated for New Artist of the Year, following Ray Charles, Darius Rucker, Jimmie Allen, and Mickey Guyton.
Notable snubs include Miranda Lambert, whose 17-year streak of nominations for Female Vocalist of the Year has ended. Similarly, Carly Pearce missed out after a three-year streak, and Midland was dropped from the Vocal Group category after six years, with The Red Clay Strays taking their place.
Carrie Underwood also failed to secure an Entertainer of the Year nod after a five-year run, as Jelly Roll took her spot.
Kacey Musgraves made a comeback, earning a Female Vocalist of the Year nomination for the first time in five years and an Album of the Year nod, after missing that category with her last release Star-Crossed.
In Male Vocalist of the Year and Vocal Duo of the Year, the nominations remained unchanged from last year.
The winners of the 58th Annual CMA Awards will be determined by a final round of voting, with the final ballot being sent to CMA members on Oct. 1. Voting concludes on Oct. 29 at 6:00 p.m. CT.
The CMA Broadcast Awards winners, determined by a panel of industry professionals, will be revealed in October and honored at the CMA Awards.
The 58th Annual CMA Awards will air live from Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on Wednesday, Nov. 20, from 8:00–11:00 p.m. ET on ABC, with next-day streaming on Hulu.
The host for the show has yet to be announced, though Luke Bryan and Peyton Manning have co-hosted the past two years.
The 58th Annual CMA Awards is produced by the Country Music Association, with Robert Deaton serving as executive producer, Alan Carter as director, and Jon Macks as head writer.
