A new Johnny Cash album isn't the only tribute to the iconic singer's legacy; a new music video featuring his granddaughter takes fans inside the house where he penned many of his hits.
Grace June Cash, the daughter of John Carter Cash and Ana Cristina Cash, explores the Cash family cabin in the black-and-white video for "Hello Out There."
"Hello Out There" is the opening track on Cash's new Songwriter album, a previously unreleased 11-song project recorded in 1993.
John Carter Cash explains that his father wrote the song about the Voyager spaceship around its launch, dating it back to at least the early '80s. Marty Stuart plays guitar on the new track. Grace, the youngest of Cash's grandchildren, is just 6 years old.
The song’s insightful lyrics are paired with a marching rhythm and piano chords. Grace June Cash is seen approaching the old family home, discovering artifacts like Johnny Cash's Bible and June Carter Cash's banjolin.
Easter eggs appear throughout the video, including family fishing poles, an 1890s Steinway piano once used by Johnny and June, his old Ampex tape recorder, and a Martin Parlor guitar that Grace examines closely.
The video ends with Grace outside, highlighting her physical resemblance to her grandmother, June Carter Cash, whom she never met.
Songwriter features demos recorded at LSI Studios in Nashville in 1993. The tracks have been re-produced with select musicians, including Marty Stuart, drummer Pete Abbott, and, on "Spotlight," the Black Keys' Dan Auerbach.
Vince Gill contributes backing vocals to the musically lighthearted and lyrically hopeful "Poor Valley Girl," a song written about June Carter Cash.
