Rising country artist and ACM Award-winning songwriter Greylan James has teamed up with superstar Cole Swindell for their heartfelt new track, “Things That I Can’t Change,” out now via Nashville Harbor Records & Entertainment.
Co-written by James, Jared Mullins, Rocky Block, and Brock Berryhill, the introspective song reflects on past mistakes and how their lessons can lead to personal growth.
The collaboration blossomed after a casual conversation during a golf game between the two friends and tourmates.
When James shared the demo with Swindell, the country star immediately recognized the song’s potential and eagerly joined the project.
“I think ‘Things That I Can’t Change’ embodies everything country music stands for—honest storytelling about experiences we’ve all lived through,” James shared.
“It’s about owning the mistakes you’ve made, learning from them, and embracing the growth that follows. Forgiveness can be tough, but it’s about giving people the chance to show they can change. And it’s okay to let the things you can’t change, change you.”
Swindell echoed the sentiment: “I’ve been a big fan of Greylan since we first wrote together years ago. His voice and the way he delivers a song is just special.
When he asked me to join him on ‘Things That I Can’t Change,’ I was honored. It’s a fantastic song with a message that I think many, including myself, can relate to. I’m excited to see where this track takes him and grateful to be part of it.”
The single marks James’ third release of the year, following “Who Broke Up With You” and “Man Up.” Both tracks have showcased his ability to captivate listeners with his powerful vocals and songwriting prowess, earning praise from outlets like Country Swag and Billboard, which featured “Who Broke Up With You” on its must-hear country songs list.
With a growing reputation as “a superstar just beginning to hit his stride” (SiriusXM), James first debuted as an artist with “Young Man” in September 2023.
While his career as an artist flourishes, James continues to shine as a songwriter. In 2023, he earned his first ACM Award for Song of the Year, co-writing Jordan Davis’ chart-topping hit “Next Thing You Know,” which also garnered him a CMA Awards nomination. Dubbed “one of country music’s best-kept secrets” (Holler), James has penned hits for stars like Kenny Chesney, Chris Young, Darius Rucker, BRELAND, and more.
James has joined major country acts, including Swindell, Old Dominion, and Scotty McCreery, on tour. He’ll close out 2024 and carry momentum into 2025 by joining Ashley Cooke on her Your Place Tour.
