Midland are 'Barely Blue' with release of new album

Updated: Oct 22

GRAMMY-nominated trio Midland has released a deluxe edition of their critically acclaimed album Barely Blue, featuring new duet versions of fan-favourite tracks.

The updated album includes “Vegas” with rising star Kaitlin Butts and “Lone Star State of Mind” with breakout artist Paul Cauthen. Over the weekend, Midland headlined the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre as part of their Get Lucky Tour, which runs through the end of the year.

Describing the new version of “Vegas,” lead singer Mark Wystrach shared, “‘Vegas’ is a tribute to the wild spirit of Sin City and the intense connections and heartbreaks that happen there.

Sung as a duet with the amazing Kaitlin Butts, it feels like a nod to early George Strait classics written by Dean Dillon.”

Bassist Cameron Duddy added, “Paul Cauthen is a true Texas outlaw, with a swagger that matches his drawl.

He’s someone we’ve admired for a long time, and it felt right to release a song together that’s rooted in the heart of Texas.”

Last month, Midland performed “Lone Star State of Mind” on Jimmy Kimmel Live! before kicking off their album release week with a feature in Esquire and a performance at the Grand Ole Opry, where they celebrated their hit “Drinkin’ Problem” receiving 5X PLATINUM certification from the RIAA.

Barely Blue has received widespread acclaim, earning praise from outlets like Rolling Stone, Billboard, Holler, Music Row, and BrooklynVegan.

The album was also featured in Texas Monthly, which highlighted how “Lone Star State of Mind” has become a modern Texas anthem.

Produced by 9X GRAMMY Award winner Dave Cobb, the eight-track collection showcases Midland’s signature harmonies while exploring themes of loneliness, resilience, and vulnerability.

The band delves into the emotions of love, loss, and moving forward, breaking down traditional notions of masculinity.

Earlier this year, Midland teamed up with Orville Peck on the track “The Hurtin’ Kind” for Peck’s album Stampede Vol. 1. They also contributed a cover of “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” for Petty Country: A Country Music Celebration of Tom Petty.
