Carrie Underwood returning to Sunday Night Football in 2024

For the 12th consecutive year, Carrie Underwood will be performing the opening theme song for NBC's Sunday Night Football.

The country music superstar has been the voice behind "Waiting All Day for Sunday Night" since 2013, taking over from fellow country artist Faith Hill.

In a joint announcement with NBC, Sunday Night Football shared their excitement: "It’s a road show like no other! Carrie Underwood stars in her 12th consecutive show open for Sunday Night Football beginning September 8 on NBC and Peacock."

NBC has a long history of using musical theme songs to enhance the viewing experience for football fans. While this tradition is common among networks, NBC sought to create a unique pre-game experience, similar to ABC’s Monday night broadcasts with Hank Williams Jr.

They initially enlisted pop singer Pink to perform an NFL-inspired version of Joan Jett's 1988 hit "I Hate Myself for Loving You," retitled "Waiting All Day for Sunday Night."

Pink's rendition and video were featured during the 2006 season. Faith Hill then took over, serving as the voice of the show for six seasons before Underwood assumed the role.

Over the years, Underwood has put her own spin on the opening theme. She adapted her hit song "Something Bad" featuring Miranda Lambert into a football-themed version called "Oh Sunday Night."

She also introduced an original song titled "Game On" but has since returned to the fan-favorite "Waiting All Day for Sunday Night."

In 2019, during the NFL's 100th anniversary, Underwood invited Joan Jett herself to join her in the opening video, paying homage to the song's roots.
